2008 Ralph Gibson Workshop
In May 2008, I had the distinct opportunity to take a one week workshop on the fine art nude with renowned photographer, Ralph Gibson. The workshop was held in Chicago, IL, USA where we had access to both a private photography studio as well as an empty, top-floor condominium for our location shooting. The class was small, and we had several good models to photograph throughout the week.
The first day started with a review and critique of our portfolio. Subsequent mornings began with a critique of the best images from the previous days work. Class time was split about equally between talk and photographing the models. Ralph gave us uninhibited insight into his life and career as a photographer. He answered any and all questions and both showed and explained to us in example after example of what he was looking for to make a great photograph.
Ralph and half of the class shot with Leica 35mm film cameras, though myself and two others used digital SLRs. Film was processed and contact sheets were made overnight at Helix in Chicago. Those of us working digitally had the opportunity to share our work with the other participants on a laptop prior to the next review.
I learned an immense amount in a very short time. And I will always be thankful to have had the opportunity to listen to and watch Ralph work. He is a kind man and a fabulous teacher.
